UPDATED: Todd Smith announces bid for candidacy - Belleville Intelligencer - Ontario, CA

By W. Brice McVicar - from the Intelligencer, Belleville, Ontario

Broadcaster Todd Smith has announced he will seek the candidacy to represent the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario in Prince Edward-Hastings.

Smith, who has served as the news director for CJBQ for the past six years, held a brief press conference at Meyers Pier and officially ended speculation on who was gunning for the candidacy.

Rumours had been circulating surrounding Smith after previous PC candidate Eric DenOuden announced last week party officials had asked him to withdraw his candidacy application papers.

"This is definitely a step out for me," Smith said as he announced his bid for the candidacy and his hopes to take the seat from incumbent Liberal MPP Leona Dombrowsky.

Smith said it was Dombrowsky's representation of the riding that prompted him to seek out the candidacy.

"I think Prince Edward-Hastings has been seriously under-represented over the past four years with Leona Dombrowsky as our MPP," he said.

"The other reason I felt I had to run is because the McGuinty government is completely inadequate at looking after the finances of this province. It's a spend and tax government. It's completely out of control."

While Smith bashed the Liberal government a handful of times during the conference he was quick to note the Ontario PC Party, with Tim Hudak as its leader, "has a plan" to improve the lives of residents in the local riding and across Ontario.

He pointed to municipal government and health care spending as examples of areas that need better support from Queen's Park.
